Dramatic Health Risks Linked to Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
More than 15 million Americans use PPIs each year. Up to 70% of PPIs uses were unnecessary; many could stop taking the medication without suffering increased heartburn or reflux, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. However, the manufacturers of these medications have continued to push their use and even admitted recently to improper market tactics to obtain a competitive advantage in their marketing.
Dementia RiskGerman researchers found that people 75 or older who regularly take the medications had a 44% increased risk of dementia, compared with seniors not using the drugs. The study was published in the prestigious JAMA Neurology Feb. 15, 2016.
